A 1000 SF ranch located in Hyannis, the house's heating and hot water needs are met almost entirely by the (7) 4'-0" x 8'-0" solar thermal panels on the roof. Although oriented approximate 25 degrees east of south, the house's south facing roof receives enough sun to provide all of the household's domestic hot water needs from April through November. In the winter months, the 1200 gallon storage tank acts as a "battery;" the tank temperature hovers around 100 degrees, just a bit too cool for showers, but ideal for radiant floor heating. By installing Pex plastic tubing underneath the 1st floor subfloor, the entire first floor is heated by water warmed in the storage tank. Radiant heating requires much lower water temperatures (80-90 degrees) than forced hot water baseboards (approx. 120) therefore is a more efficient and even more comfortable system. The heated floor makes bare feet comfortable even in February, and is much appreciated by Kula, the lab, whose bed stays toasty all winter! |
